Apprenticeships
In partnership with Belfast Metropolitan College, we’re offering apprentices the opportunity to play a role in the future of maritime transport through our Advanced Manufacturing & Engineering Apprenticeship. Apprentices will gain insight into a wide range of skills – from initial design, manufacturing, and construction to maintenance and overhaul of in-service craft. Applications for the 2024 intake of apprentices are now open.

What does a typical day at Artemis Technologies entail?
A key area of my job is organising the distribution of the £33 million UKRI (UK Research and Innovation) Strength and Places Fund grant secured by the company and the rest of the Belfast Maritime Consortium to develop and build zero-emissions vessels in the city.
So I’m liaising with our consortium partners which encompasses both established and young firms, academia, and local government. The appropriate distribution of funding is essential in creating the best possible environment for our research and innovation to flourish while supporting thousands of employment opportunities across the next decade.

What skills are needed for this role?
As an accountant, being savvy with numbers and having analytical skills is helpful, however, resilience, attention to detail, and being inquisitive are also important. Working within a start-up like Artemis Technologies means communication is essential. You’re working with various departments where you’re communicating financial information to others helping contribute to important discussions and high-level decision-making.

What are the best and most challenging aspects you've faced within this job?
The team works very well together, everyone is open with what’s happening at every development stage and what support may be required from different departments. Right now, one of the main challenges is recruiting the very best people and then bringing them up to speed with what is required.

Learn. Never stop learning and expanding your knowledge. Keep asking questions and work with people with lots of expertise. This will not only help develop and increase your skills-base and aid career expansion but will provide a great sense of fulfilment.

What does a typical day at Artemis Technologies entail?
No day is ever the same, we’re growing at a fast pace and we have a variety of innovative products across different sectors. A typical day involves me working closely within the team to identify priorities and opportunities. My role involves anything from content creation to market research, from press to events.

What skills are needed for this role?
First and foremost it’s essential to be adaptable, to be willing to try new things and step up to challenges and opportunities. To work in marketing you need a wide range of skills but communication, creativity and curiosity would be some of the most important.

What are the best and most challenging aspects you're faced with in this job?
Working in Artemis Technologies has been very exciting as we get to work with new technology which has the potential to bring about positive change to maritime operations to build a more sustainable future. Not only that, the people I work with are very supportive and it really does feel like a team effort.
The most challenging aspect of the job is not coming from a maritime background and getting up to speed with all the details and nuances of different sectors within different regions around the world through market research. I have found learning about the maritime industry very interesting.

What advice would you give to someone considering a similar career?
I have two pieces of advice:
Be a lifelong learner. There is always more to know. Seek out opportunities to learn from others, don’t be afraid to ask the ‘silly’ question.
Don’t wait until you can do something perfectly. Just make a start, there is no better way to learn than to put a skill to practice. The best way to do this is to find ways to practice in a low risk environment/task and don’t be afraid to ‘fail’.
